Brain Game for Beginners - A game with the mind

The artwork "Brain Game for Beginners" by Katrin Schilke, exhibited in the exhibition "Tondo", takes the viewer on a surreal journey into the world of thinking and playful use of one's own mind. The 13 x 18 cm picture shows two young women in Victorian clothing playing a game on a green meadow. But instead of a typical ball, there is a realistic brain at the center of the action.

In this presentation, Schilke gives the game a new, deeper meaning. While the two women are happy and focused on the "play device" - a brain - the viewer is inevitably invited to reflect on the symbolism. The brain, traditionally a symbol of intellect, consciousness and rationality, is presented here as the subject of a game that is normally considered simple and straightforward. But playing with the brain points to a deeper level: the playful and perhaps thoughtless handling of our thoughts, our knowledge and our consciousness.

The ironic title "Brain Game for Beginners" suggests that playing with the brain – thinking – is actually something that you have to learn first. It reflects the idea that managing one's mind and thoughts is a lifelong learning process. The viewer is encouraged to think about how often we ourselves deal with the important things in life thoughtlessly or perhaps even playfully.

What makes this work of art particularly fascinating is the way it was created. The image was originally created using artificial intelligence (AI), which developed the visual style and composition. The different layers of the image were then carefully cut out and glued on top of each other to create a three-dimensional effect. This technique gives the work a special depth and texture, allowing the viewer to view the scene from different perspectives and delve even deeper into the symbolism depicted.

The scene, which captures a nostalgic atmosphere of times gone by, is turned on its head by the modern, surreal component of the brain. A tension arises between tradition and modernity, between the seemingly harmless and the disturbing. This interplay between the familiar and the unusual challenges the viewer to discover new perspectives and question their own mind.

With "Brain Game for Beginners" Katrin Schilke creates a work of art that impresses not only with its aesthetics, but also with its narrative depth and innovative technique. It invites you to a dialogue about the human mind, the handling of knowledge and the way we shape our thoughts. In the exhibition "Tondo", this work is a unique contribution that playfully but at the same time profoundly explores the limits of our perception and understanding.
